1A. Determine where the FlatWire Ready® Light Fixture(s) will be mounted, make sure an electrical outlet is nearby for supplying power to the fixture(s). Estimate the amount of FlatWire required for the installation and check against the amount supplied in the kit (25'). |
| 1B. Mark a center point for each Light Fixture location on the wall. |
1C. Disconnect the power to the electrical outlet at the breaker panel and remove the outlet's faceplate. Check the orientation of the outlet with the Flatwire Ready® Wall Plate and Transformer. The electrical outlet and the Transformer ground pins must be oriented to allow the transformer to plug into the outlet and the FlatWire Ready® Connector. |
| 1D. Draw the path for the FlatWire from the electrical outlet to the marked location of the light fixture. This path typically begins downward from the electrical outlet and then folds to make a right angle above the floor or molding. The FlatWire will continue to run horizontally with the floor until you fold another right angle in the FlatWire to run vertically up to the first light fixture. If more than one light fixture will be installed, continue to mark the path past the first light fixture to the second light fixture. |
1E. Holding the Cross Mounting Bracket on the marked center point (from step 1B), mark the location of the mounting holes. The mounting holes are located diagonally on the mounting bracket. The mounting bolts are located horizontally. Install the Cross Mounting Bracket on marked location using supplied drywall anchors if wood stud is not available. |
| 1F. Insert one end of the FlatWire into the groove of a Connector Cover. The Flatwire Ready® Connector Cover includes this groove to protect the end of the FlatWire and a Breakaway Alignment Guide to aid in inserting the FlatWire. (see diagram 1F) |
Diagram 1F |
| 1G. Once the FlatWire is inserted in the groove, lay the FlatWire over into the alignment guide. |
1H. Place the FlatWire Ready® Connector onto the Connector Cover until it clicks on loosely (first click). Then, with some force, push the Connector until it clicks again (second click) causing the connector pins to penetrate the FlatWire. Make sure to press firmly throughout the connector to ensure complete penetration into FlatWire. (This step may require pliers.) |
| 1I. Remove the Breakaway Alignment Guide at the perforation (because it will interfere with the wall plate). |
1J. Place the Connector with FlatWire attached into the bottom molded portion of the FlatWire Ready® Wall Plate. Make sure the Connector Cover will face the wall. |
| Note: For 'Decora-style' outlets, you must first remove the outlet divider section of the cover plate along the perforated lines as shown. |
1K. Install the Wall Plate onto the electrical outlet using provided screws with the FlatWire hanging down, sideways, or upward depending on the outlet orientation. There are two different types of screws for installing the wall plate. The first type of screw with the blunt end is used to screw the wall plate to the outlet. The second longer screw with the pointed end is designed to screw the wall plate directly to the sheetrock for added stability. |
| 1L.Make sure that the Transformer switch is in the off position. Plug the Transformer into the electrical outlet and Connector to ensure fit, then remove transformer. |
2A. Begin at the base of the FlatWire Ready® Wall Plate. Hold the FlatWire Ready® Spray Adhesive (use of any other adhesive will void FlatWire warranty) 6-8 inches from the surface and spray along the path where the FlatWire will be installed. Spray pattern should be at least 3 inches wide. Wait approximately one minute before applying the FlatWire. Note: If only paint is to be used in concealment, spray the adhesive directly on the wire instead of spraying the wall to avoid overspray. |
| 2B. Place FlatWire to adhesive path. Start from base of the Wall Plate and work to the Cross Mounting Bracket. Make sure all edges of the wire are secured tightly against the surface. Smooth out the FlatWire with your hand or a blunt, non-metallic object. This should remove any wrinkles, folds, or air pockets in the FlatWire. To change directions simply fold the FlatWire at a right angle bend. Be sure to spray adhesive inside the folded joints to adhere FlatWire to itself. After fold, continue applying the FlatWire along adhesive path. |
2C. Stop applying FlatWire at the first light fixture location and proceed to the next step. DO NOT cut the FlatWire at this time if more than one light fixture is being installed, and be sure to leave at least 6 inches of extra FlatWire before proceeding with the 2nd or 3rd fixture. |
| Note: According to what obstacles are in the FlatWire path, you may continue past the first light fixture either vertically (as shown) before making a right angle bend or you may make a right angle behind the light fixture as pictured in step 2C. Just be sure to have the FlatWire between the Mounting Bolts so that the FlatWire does not get damaged. |
3A. At the first light fixture location, install the Connector directly over the Cross Mounting Bracket. Align the FlatWire on the Breakaway Alignment Guide of the Connector Cover and continue to install the connector using steps 1H and 1I above. The FlatWire will NOT be cut at this location if installing more than one light fixture, but will pass through to the next light fixture. Note: Be sure to leave extra FlatWire (3 inches on each side of connector) where connector is installed over the Cross Mounting Bracket to allow for ease of light fixture installation. |
| 3B. Resume applying FlatWire to the wall with the adhesive (described in steps 2A and 2B) from light fixture #1 until the light fixture #2 location is reached. At the second light fixture location, cut the FlatWire approximately 6 inches past the Cross Mounting Bracket and attach connector following steps 1F through 1I above. Note: If installing 3 light fixtures do not cut at this location. |
3C. Assemble the Light Fixture. Place the decorative glass shade onto the fixture and install Check Ring (if included in hardware kit) over socket. Align pins on bulb with holes in socket and insert. (DO NOT touch bulb with fingers) * |
| 3D. Twist the retention ring/clear glass dome assembly clockwise (using the clear glass dome) until snug.* *Note: See Fixture instructions for more details and diagrams. |
3E. Install the FlatWire Ready® Light Fixture by first inserting the brass tabs on the end of the wire leads from the fixture into the FlatWire Ready® Connector. |
| 3F. Place Light Fixture on the Cross Mounting Bracket aligning the fixture with the mounting bolts. Make sure all wires are tucked behind Light Fixture and hand tighten decorative nuts onto mounting bolts. |
3G. Test the system. Once Light Fixtures are installed, plug the Transformer into the now FlatWire Ready® electrical outlet. Restore power to the electrical outlet at the breaker panel. Proceed to turn the lights on by first turning on the Transformer switch and then the Light Fixture(s) switch. |
| 3H. Once the Light Fixtures have been tested, disconnect the power to the electrical outlet at the breaker panel. Proceed to remove the FlatWire Ready® Transformer, Light Fixtures and Wall Plate. |
4A. Apply FlatWire Ready® Mesh Tape over the FlatWire ensuring a tight bond. At all bends, extend the mesh beyond the FlatWire by 1". Note: Do not overlap mesh tape. This will add thickness and make concealment more difficult. |
| 4B. Apply concealing compound over FlatWire Ready® Mesh Tape and allow manufacturer's recommended dry time. (May require several coats) |
4C. Sand the compound to blend with surrounding surface. |
| 4D. After final coat is dry, simply paint or wallpaper to make it disappear. Wait 24 Hours for concealment to completely cure. |
4E. After 24 hours have past, install the FlatWire Ready® Wall Plate. Then connect and mount the Light Fixtures using steps 3E and 3F from instructions above. |
| 4F. Plug the FlatWire Ready® Transformer into the now FlatWire Ready® electrical outlet |
4G. Make sure the Transformer switch is in the off position and restore power to the electrical outlet at the breaker panel. Turn the lights on by first turning on the Transformer switch and then the Light Fixture(s) switch. |
| 4H. You are now FlatWire Ready®! Enjoy! |
