Top 10 Questions

1. Can FlatWire be used with existing round wire?

FlatWire and our connectors work with existing wiring in new or older structures for virtually any type of wiring application. FlatWire has engineered connectors and adapters that make it easy for professionals and do-it-yourselfers to install anything requiring wiring, from traditional electrical products to the newest high-technology device safely, easily and cost-effectively.

2. How cost-effective is FlatWire?

FlatWire saves time and money in a complete install scenario. Because FlatWire is installed on the surface of walls and/or ceilings instead of behind the walls, there is no cost associated with drywall or plaster repairs - and no mess either.

3. How do I change directions with FlatWire? Can I bend FlatWire during installation?

Most installations do not go in a straight line without any bends, and FlatWire products were designed to give you the flexibility to have a wire run anywhere. Simply bend the FlatWire and crease it onto itself. You may make multiple bends as needed and it still does not affect performance in any way.

4. Does FlatWire require any drilling or in-wall installation?

No. FlatWire products are installed directly on the surface of walls and ceilings using adhesives; no drilling or in-wall installation is necessary.

5. How is FlatWire attached to the wall?

FlatWire products attach to the wall with FlatWire Ready® Spray Adhesive, which is sprayed to the wall before the wire is attached. The adhesive is tacky enough to provide 5 minutes of readjustment time if necessary. A professional installation would include standard wall or joint compounds and techniques to blend the minor thickness differential to the wall.

6. How can the wiring be “invisible” if installed directly on a surface?

FlatWire products are so thin; they are nearly imperceptible by sight or feel when installed properly. The wires range from 4/1000 of an inch to 16/1000 of an inch, or about as thin as a business card. Once attached to the wall, the product is painted or wallpapered to become virtually invisible. Before painting, we recommend that installers use a traditional “blending” compound over the wire to blend it into the wall.

7. Is professional installation required for FlatWire products?

A definite "No." Both contractors and do-it-yourselfers can install the FlatWire Ready wiring and interconnect devices with basic redecorating techniques and a minimal understanding of wiring.

8. Can you install FlatWire products over a textured surface?

Yes. The first step is to use a special tool to clear a path through the textured surface. Next, attach the wire along the path using our FlatWire Ready® Spray Adhesive. Finally purchase a textured ceiling repair kit and apply to cover the wire's path.

9. When will Electrical FlatWire be available?

We are excited about the development of the 120-volt AC Electrical FlatWire. Unfortunately, it is not on the market yet. We have received the approval for the 2008 National Electric Code (NEC). We are now going through the UL testing process to receive our listing.

10. Has FlatWire been approved for use by regulatory entities?

Concealable Nonmetallic Extension (CNE) was approved under Article 382 of the 2008 National Electric Code (NEC). FlatWire standard 120VAC electrical wiring applications is based on CNE technology, making it approved for use in commercial and residential wiring projects. Southwire is currently working with UL for listing of the CNE system.
